President Ranil Wickremesinghe announced new plans to establish both public and private educational institutions aimed at providing Sri Lanka’s youth with globally recognised opportunities for higher education. The announcement was made at the inauguration of the “Times School of Higher Education,” launched by Wijeya Newspapers Group at the Galle Face Hotel in Colombo.
The Times School of Higher Education is focused on delivering job-oriented education through partnerships with three international universities. The institute offers a variety of programs, including certificates, diplomas, advanced diplomas, and professional skill development courses. It also provides undergraduate and postgraduate opportunities via its Digital Academy.
A five-member Advisory Board, composed of educational experts, will oversee the institute’s operations. Their mission is to ensure that the curriculum meets global standards while fostering stronger partnerships with international universities.
During his speech at the event, President Wickremesinghe stressed the importance of education in building a future-ready workforce, especially as Sri Lanka transitions to an export-oriented economy. He highlighted the need for vocational training, stating that the Government plans to allocate funds to support the training of 50,000 youth in recognised institutions. Additionally, he mentioned the goal of creating 100,000 jobs in emerging industries over the next few years.
“For the digital economy we aspire to build, such institutions are essential. Our goal is to provide the youth with the support they need to access quality employment opportunities,” the President said.
The inauguration also included the launch of the official website for the Times School of Higher Education, a move aimed at enhancing educational access for students across Sri Lanka.
Dignitaries in attendance included New Zealand High Commissioner to Sri Lanka David Pine, Education Minister Dr. Susil Premajayantha, Senior Advisor to the President on Climate Change Ruwan Wijewardene, University Grants Commission Chairman Prof. Sampath Amaratunge, Wijeya Newspapers Chairman Ranjith Wijewardene, and other key representatives from international educational institutions.
