Fishermen Call for Lower Gear Prices and Fuel Subsidy from Government

The Central Fish Market Association (CFM) has called on the newly elected government led by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake to address the rising prices of fishing gear, which have severely impacted the fishing industry. CFM Chairman Jayasiri Wickramarachchi stated that the entire fishing community cast their vote for the President and now seeks immediate intervention to reduce the high costs of essential fishing equipment, such as nets, electrical tools for trawlers and boats, rods, reels, and lines.

Wickramarachchi mentioned that despite raising this issue with the previous government, no action was taken. He emphasized the need for the new administration to consider the current exorbitant fish prices in the market and provide solutions for the fishing community.

In addition to fishing gear costs, Wickramarachchi called for a fuel subsidy, particularly for diesel and kerosene, which have severely affected small-scale trawlers and fishing boats. The recent fuel price hikes have led to a reduction in fish stock supply to the Peliyagoda main fish market, as many fishermen have scaled back their operations.

He warned that if fishermen are forced to stop working, it will negatively impact consumers, hoteliers, and seafood exporters, who contribute significantly to Sri Lanka’s economy.
