The Women’s Chamber of Industry and Commerce (WCIC) recently held its 39th Annual General Meeting (AGM), marking another significant milestone in its mission to empower women in business and entrepreneurship across Sri Lanka. Founded in 1985 as the world’s first chamber focused on advancing women, WCIC continues to champion female leadership and business development.
Led by Chairperson Anoji De Silva and a 15-member board, this year’s AGM celebrated WCIC’s accomplishments during the 2023/24 term and set the stage for future initiatives. The leadership highlighted the chamber’s dedication to fostering sustainable businesses and advocating for increased women’s participation in the economy.
WCIC’s recent partnerships with organizations such as the Center for Private Enterprise (CIPE), OAV (German Asia Pacific Organization), UNESCAP, USAID, and others were emphasized as key achievements. These collaborations have provided women entrepreneurs with critical support in areas like financial literacy, export readiness, and digital marketing. A notable development was the establishment of WCIC’s first provincial chapter in the Northern Province, further extending its influence.
During the AGM, Ms. Gayani De Alwis was elected as the new Chairperson for 2024-2025. In her acceptance speech, she expressed gratitude to WCIC’s founders and past leaders, committing to expanding membership and empowering women entrepreneurs to build inclusive and sustainable businesses.
Outgoing Chairperson Anoji De Silva reflected on her successful three-year tenure, expressing pride in WCIC’s impactful programs and wishing the new board continued success.
Key Achievements in 2023/24:
- Strategic Partnerships: WCIC collaborated with key organizations like USAID, DFCC Bank, and the SAARC Chamber of Commerce to provide women entrepreneurs with essential resources, particularly in financial literacy and digital marketing.
- Regional Expansion: WCIC saw increased participation from the Northern Province, underscoring its growing national presence.
- Gender-Based Advocacy: The chamber continued its advocacy against gender-based violence in workplaces through partnerships with CIPE.
The AGM also honored the achievements of 86 women entrepreneurs at the Prathibhabhisheka Women Entrepreneur Awards, which recognized winners from various regions and sectors. WCIC’s ongoing initiatives like Santa’s Village, Avurudu Udawa, and the newly launched Ramp Up fashion show provide valuable platforms for female entrepreneurs.
In support of women with limited skills, WCIC partnered with the Australian Government’s Direct Aid Program (DAP) to provide livelihood training, helping women in the Kurunegala District gain qualifications in elder and childcare and start their own businesses.
The AGM’s Chief Guest, UNDP Resident Representative Ms. Azusa Kubota, praised WCIC’s efforts in advancing women’s economic empowerment, both in rural and urban areas. As WCIC approaches its 40th year, it remains focused on advocating for gender-inclusive workplaces, promoting export-ready businesses, and helping women entrepreneurs overcome barriers to success.
