In a letter to Sri Lanka’s newly elected President Anura Kumar Dissanayake, US President Joe Biden expressed a commitment to strengthening ties between the two nations, focusing on economic development, regional security, and democratic governance. The letter, described by Sri Lanka’s President’s Media Division (PMD) as a “significant gesture of diplomatic goodwill,” followed Dissanayake’s recent election victory.
Biden congratulated Dissanayake on the peaceful and democratic nature of the election, emphasizing the importance of Sri Lanka’s democratic institutions. “This election reflects the strength of Sri Lanka’s democratic institutions and the commitment of its citizens to shaping their future through free and fair elections,” Biden said.
The US has pledged essential support to enhance Sri Lanka’s economy, with focus areas including fostering an export-driven economy, renewable energy development, and rural poverty alleviation. US Ambassador Julie Chung also highlighted ongoing discussions with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) to provide financial and technical assistance.
Additionally, the US supports President Dissanayake’s initiatives to combat fraud and corruption, promote good governance, and ensure national security. The US is also backing expanded programmes like providing lunches for rural and urban schoolchildren.
Biden emphasized the shared values between the two nations, particularly in promoting stability, prosperity, and inclusivity for all Sri Lankans. “The United States shares your vision of a more equitable Sri Lanka that is stable, prosperous, and inclusive of all its citizens,” Biden stated, expressing optimism for stronger bilateral ties under Dissanayake’s leadership.
The PMD hailed Biden’s message as marking a new chapter in US-Sri Lanka relations, with both nations poised for collaboration on initiatives benefiting the region and upholding democratic principles.
