The Sri Lankan Cabinet has given the green light for the development of two wind power stations with a capacity of 484 megawatts each in Mannar and Pooneryn, as announced by the Government Information Department. This decision stems from the approval granted in March 2022 to enter into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Adani Green Energy Limited, an Indian company, to undertake the project. Following this, a negotiation committee was formed to assess the project proposal put forth by Adani Green Energy Limited.
After careful evaluation, the negotiation committee presented its recommendations to the Cabinet of Ministers, leading to the approval of the project’s key parameters. The approved resolution, forwarded by the Power and Energy Minister, includes accepting a price of 8.26 cents per kilowatt-hour (KW) for the electricity generated by the wind power stations. Additionally, the tender for this project has been awarded to Adani Green Energy SL Limited, with the agreement spanning a period of 20 years.
This development marks a significant stride in Sri Lanka’s renewable energy sector, emphasizing the government’s commitment to fostering sustainable energy sources. The establishment of wind power stations in Mannar and Pooneryn is expected to contribute substantially to the country’s energy production capacity while advancing its goals for environmental conservation and energy security.
