Ambewela Farms Achieves Record 62,000 Litres Daily Milk Production

Lanka Milk Foods (CWE) PLC (LMF) has set a remarkable milestone at its Ambewela Farms, reaching a record-breaking daily milk production of 62,000 litres from a single source. This achievement marks significant growth from the 3,000 litres per day recorded when the company took over the facility from the state sector in 2001. Today, Ambewela Farms contributes 20 million litres of milk annually to Sri Lanka’s national supply, demonstrating the transformative impact of modernisation, expertise, and dedication.

The farms’ evolution has been fueled by meticulous planning, major investments, and the adoption of innovative farming practices. A significant breakthrough came in 2019 with a Rs. 5 billion investment in modernisation, which included the installation of two automated dairy housing and milking systems. These advancements have played a pivotal role in increasing productivity.

Ambewela’s success is further attributed to a forward-thinking breeding programme using sexed semen from globally renowned stud bulls, enabling the production of high-yielding cows locally. These cows, which rival the best commercial herds globally, produce up to 12,000 litres per 305-day lactation cycle. On average, dairy cows at Ambewela Farms deliver up to 40 litres of milk per day.

Nutrition has also been a critical factor. Guided by international nutritionists, Ambewela Farms employs precision feeding systems tailored to high-yielding cows’ needs. Purpose-bred grass varieties, cultivated on the farm’s pastures, ensure optimal nutrition. Advanced feeding and care systems for calves contribute to superior growth and early maturity, boosting overall herd productivity.

Sarath Bandara, General Manager of Farms, highlighted the collaborative efforts behind this achievement. “By combining global knowledge with local expertise and commitment, we’ve set a new standard for dairy production in Sri Lanka. We remain dedicated to uplifting the dairy industry and supporting national self-sufficiency through improved productivity and quality excellence,” he said.

Beyond its operations, Ambewela Farms supports local farmers by providing high-quality offspring from its herds, enabling them to enhance productivity and adopt best practices. This approach not only bolsters the efficiency and self-sufficiency of Sri Lanka’s dairy industry but also strengthens the island’s food security. Ambewela Farms exemplifies the potential of integrating advanced technology, expert guidance, and sustainable practices to transform the agricultural sector.
