Asia Siyaka Warehouse Sets ZeroCarbon Tea Logistics Benchmark

Asia Siyaka Warehouse ZeroCarbon certification has positioned Sri Lanka’s tea logistics sector on the global sustainability map, marking a historic milestone that strengthens the country’s reputation as a leader in environmentally responsible tea production and export value chains.

Asia Siyaka Warehouse leads global tea logistics with ZeroCarbon certification

Asia Siyaka Warehouse ZeroCarbon certification represents a landmark achievement for Sri Lanka’s tea industry, establishing a new global benchmark in sustainable auction logistics. Asia Siyaka Warehousing (Pvt.) Ltd, the country’s largest tea auction logistics provider, has become the world’s first and only ZeroCarbon-certified company operating within the tea auction logistics segment, reinforcing Sri Lanka’s leadership in sustainable commodity supply chains.

The certification was awarded by Sustainable Future Group, Sri Lanka’s foremost sustainability certification authority, following a rigorous evaluation of the company’s environmental practices. The recognition underscores Asia Siyaka Warehousing’s commitment to responsible operations while elevating the global standing of Sri Lanka’s tea logistics infrastructure.

With this milestone, Sri Lanka and Ceylon Tea now occupy a unique position globally as the only tea-producing nation demonstrating a fully sustainable value chain. From plantation-level cultivation and environmentally responsible packaging to carbon-neutral warehousing and export logistics, the country has achieved an unmatched level of end-to-end sustainability that few agricultural industries worldwide can replicate.

Asia Siyaka Warehousing’s achievement is further strengthened by its existing Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification, making it the first tea logistics facility in the world to hold both LEED and ZeroCarbon distinctions. This dual certification reflects the company’s long-term investment in energy efficiency, sustainable building design, and operational excellence within the tea storage and auction ecosystem.

The company has also distinguished itself through food safety leadership, becoming the first in its sector to secure ISO 22000 certification. As a wholly owned subsidiary of Asia Siyaka Commodities PLC, one of Sri Lanka’s leading commodity brokerage firms, the warehousing arm plays a critical role in maintaining quality, traceability, and compliance standards demanded by international tea buyers.

ZeroCarbon certification is awarded only to organisations that comprehensively measure, reduce, and offset their carbon emissions. In partnership with the Climate and Conservation Consortium, Asia Siyaka Warehousing conducted a detailed assessment of its annual greenhouse gas emissions. Based on this assessment, the company implemented targeted emission reduction measures across energy usage, operations, and infrastructure, before neutralising remaining emissions through verified carbon offset initiatives.

Among these initiatives is Asia Siyaka Warehousing’s continued contribution to the Rotary One Million Trees reforestation programme, which supports long-term carbon sequestration while delivering broader environmental and community benefits. These efforts ensure that the company’s operational footprint is fully carbon neutral, meeting internationally recognised sustainability benchmarks.

Managing Director Anil Cooke described the certification as both a responsibility and a promise to stakeholders across the tea value chain. He noted that Sri Lankan tea already holds the distinction of being the world’s first and only Ozone Friendly Tea, and the achievement of ZeroCarbon status further strengthens the industry’s environmental credentials. According to Cooke, the certification reflects a commitment to operate responsibly for clients, growers, shareholders, and future generations while prioritising ethical business practices that benefit people and the planet.

Beyond environmental leadership, the Asia Siyaka Warehouse ZeroCarbon certification offers tangible commercial advantages to tea producers and exporters using its facilities. By operating a carbon-neutral warehouse, the company enables clients to reduce a measurable portion of their overall supply chain emissions, supporting alignment with global sustainability frameworks and the rising expectations of environmentally conscious buyers in key international markets.

Cooke emphasised that the world-first achievement delivers a clear competitive advantage to exporters, particularly as sustainability considerations increasingly influence purchasing decisions across Europe, North America, and emerging premium markets. The ability to demonstrate carbon-neutral storage and logistics strengthens brand positioning and enhances market access for Sri Lankan tea.

Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Charmara Dissanayake highlighted that the benefits of ZeroCarbon-certified warehousing extend beyond emissions reduction. He explained that the company’s controlled, energy-efficient storage environment preserves the freshness, aroma, and quality integrity of tea, which are critical factors in maintaining product value at auction and during export.

Dissanayake further noted that as global markets place growing emphasis on traceability and environmental responsibility, teas stored in carbon-neutral facilities gain enhanced appeal among buyers seeking ethically sourced products. This alignment with international sustainability trends not only reinforces environmental responsibility but also delivers measurable commercial value across the supply chain.

As sustainability becomes an integral component of global trade, Asia Siyaka Warehousing’s achievement signals a broader transformation within Sri Lanka’s tea industry. The company’s leadership demonstrates how environmental stewardship, operational efficiency, and commercial competitiveness can coexist, setting a replicable model for other sectors within the country’s export economy.

The Asia Siyaka Warehouse ZeroCarbon certification ultimately reinforces Sri Lanka’s reputation as a progressive tea-producing nation capable of meeting the highest global sustainability standards. By integrating climate responsibility into logistics and warehousing, the company has elevated Sri Lanka’s tea value chain while setting a precedent that resonates well beyond the auction floor.
