Bank of Ceylon Appoints New Board Directors

Bank of Ceylon has strengthened its leadership team with the appointment of Thulci Aluwihare and Sharmini Ratwatte as independent directors. The new board members bring extensive experience in finance, corporate strategy, and governance, effective from September 16.

Sri Lanka’s state-owned Bank of Ceylon has appointed Thulci Aluwihare and Sharmini Ratwatte to its board as independent, non-executive directors, a move designed to enhance strategic oversight and governance. Thulci Aluwihare, Deputy Managing Director of CHEC Port City Colombo (Pvt) Ltd, is an experienced investment professional with over 25 years of international expertise in corporate wealth creation, mergers and acquisitions, and investment strategy. He has served in senior advisory roles in London, Melbourne, and Colombo, and played a key role in establishing the Colombo International Financial Centre and promoting the USD 15 billion Port City development.

Sharmini Ratwatte, a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants, UK, and MBA graduate from the University of Colombo, brings decades of leadership experience across finance, management, and C-suite roles. She has held non-executive directorships at John Keells PLC, Ceylon Cold Stores PLC, and BPPL PLC, and is actively engaged in environmental and social initiatives as Chairperson of the Environmental Foundation Ltd and Trustee of the Sunera Foundation. Her current roles include non-executive directorships at the National Credit Guarantee Institution Ltd, Convenience Food (Lanka) PLC, and Greenpeace Asia Ltd.

The appointments reflect Bank of Ceylon’s commitment to robust corporate governance and strategic growth, leveraging the expertise of seasoned professionals to guide the bank through a competitive and evolving financial landscape. Analysts view these additions as a positive step in strengthening the bank’s leadership framework, with potential benefits for investor confidence and operational effectiveness.
