Breakdown in Parliament: Long-Awaited Meeting on Visa Crisis Finally Held

After weeks of frustration and delays, a crucial meeting addressing the visa issuance controversy finally took place on Tuesday, June 4th, at the Parliament premises. The Committee on Public Finance (CoPF), chaired by MP Dr. Harsha de Silva, met with officials from the Public Security Ministry and the Department of Immigration and Emigration.

These officials were previously absent from multiple scheduled meetings, causing significant public concern. However, in this latest session, they reportedly addressed the ongoing issues related to the visa process handled by VFS Global, a third-party service provider.

While details remain confidential until the release of a promised report, Dr. de Silva’s commitment to transparency is a positive sign. He has stated via social media platform ‘X’ that a detailed report will be presented “at the earliest.”

This development comes after growing public dissatisfaction with VFS Global’s new visa issuance system. A viral video showcasing a Sri Lankan passenger’s frustration at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) highlighted the delays and additional fees associated with the new process.

The controversy stems from a December 2023 Cabinet decision authorizing GBS Technology Services, IVS Global, and VFS Global to manage online visa applications for foreign visitors to Sri Lanka. This outsourcing move, coupled with increased fees, has been heavily criticized by the travel and tourism industry, as well as the IT sector.

Citizens and stakeholders alike will be looking forward to the CoPF’s report, hoping for a resolution that addresses the concerns surrounding the new visa issuance system and ensures a smoother travel experience for visitors to Sri Lanka.
