In a pioneering move for Sri Lanka’s broadcasting landscape, National Television ‘Rupavahini’ recently debuted a Sinhala news program utilizing Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology. During their 8 pm news telecast, Rupavahini employed AI-generated replicas of prominent TV anchors, Nishadhi Bandaranayake and Chaminda Gunaratne, marking a significant milestone in the integration of AI into media production. The program showcased a substantial portion of news content presented through this innovative technology, offering viewers a glimpse into the latest advancements in AI-driven broadcasting experiences.
This initiative follows Rupavahini’s successful utilization of AI technology earlier, notably during the broadcast of New Year rituals, which garnered significant praise and engagement from audiences both locally and internationally. Spearheading this endeavor is producer Gamini Bandara Menikdiwela, operating under the guidance of National Television Chairman Dr. Prasad Samarasinghe. Menikdiwela, equipped with expertise acquired through specialized training in Dubai, is leveraging AI technology to propel Sri Lanka’s electronic media landscape forward. With plans to further explore and utilize this technology in future broadcasts, National Television aims to continue providing novel experiences to its audience, positioning itself at the forefront of technological innovation in media production.
