Former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga has acknowledged a historical error in nominating former President Maithripala Sirisena as a Presidential candidate in 2015. She expressed regret over this decision and indicated that responsibility for the current state of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) should be shared by two individuals, mentioning her removal from the party by both of them.
Kumaratunga also emphasized her support for the SLFP under the leadership of acting president Minister Nimal Siripala De Silva, considering it as the authentic representation of the party. She mentioned her willingness to accept a position within the party and extend support to members committed to steering the party in the right direction, promoting unity and progress.
