Ceylon Chamber Welcomes National Digital Economy Strategy

The Ceylon Chamber of Commerce has identified the Digital Economy as a pivotal driver for accelerating Sri Lanka’s economic growth. The recently unveiled National Digital Economy Strategy 2030, spearheaded by the Ministry of Technology, charts a course to harness the potential of the digital realm. This strategy centers on bolstering digital infrastructure, introducing Digital ID systems, strengthening cybersecurity laws, fostering connected digital governance, and enhancing digital skills across government and industries. These strategic areas, long advocated by the Chamber, notably include the swift implementation of Digital ID measures.

The Chamber actively participated in the consultation process for drafting the strategy, contributing insights through representation in the High-Level Officers Committee under the coordination of the Secretary to the Prime Minister. Additionally, the Chamber’s Digital Economy committee provided valuable input and guidance. As the strategy document undergoes public and stakeholder review, there’s an opportune moment for enhanced engagement to fortify the strategy’s effectiveness and action plan.

While crafting strategies is crucial, successful implementation remains paramount. The strategy document delineates an institutional framework and a proposed action plan for execution. It’s imperative that this plan is executed with government ownership and industry collaboration to ensure tangible outcomes and sustained progress in advancing Sri Lanka’s digital economy agenda.
