The 10th anniversary of the Colombo International Maritime and Logistics Conference (CIMC), held last month, celebrated the contributions of industry leaders and organizations through posthumous recognitions and accolades for current leaders in the maritime, shipping, and logistics sectors.
The late Ravindra Galhena, Rohan Abeywickrema, and Julian Bevis were posthumously honored for their significant contributions to the industry. Former Speaker of Parliament Karu Jayasuriya, Hayleys Advantis Ltd., and senior journalist and Daily FT Editor Nisthar Cassim were also recognized for their impact on the sector. The awards were presented by CIMC Sri Lanka founder Rohan Masakorala, with Western Province Governor Hanif Yusoof officiating at the ceremony.
Late Ravindra Galhena, who was in the UK in 2014 with Informa Group (Containerisation International), played a pivotal role in establishing the conference. He proposed the name “Colombo International Maritime Conference” and was deeply involved in organizing the inaugural event.
Late Rohan Abeywickrema, a key maritime personality in Sri Lanka, helped establish the conference by advocating for government support and inviting then-Speaker Karu Jayasuriya to become its patron. His vision was for the conference to grow and enhance Sri Lanka’s maritime profile.
Late Julian Bevis, regional head for Maersk and APMT in India, was a staunch supporter of the conference from its inception. His involvement and moral support helped elevate the event’s stature in Sri Lanka, India, and Bangladesh. Despite his passing in 2022, his contributions continue to inspire the maritime community.
The event highlighted the legacy of these leaders and recognized ongoing contributions to Sri Lanka’s maritime industry, emphasizing the conference’s role in promoting the sector across the region.
