Minister Jeevan Thondaman, the General Secretary of the Ceylon Worker’s Congress (CWC), expressed satisfaction with the government’s efforts in addressing the concerns of plantation sector workers. Speaking at the CWC’s May Day rally held at the Kotagala Public Ground, Thondaman highlighted the concessions provided to the workers under President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s administration, noting that the commitments made to the community are being fulfilled.
Thondaman acknowledged the challenges faced due to the COVID-19 pandemic and economic downturn, which had prevented the organization of a May Day rally for several years. However, he emphasized the progress made in addressing key issues during this time, particularly regarding land ownership for the estate workers. Thondaman stated that President Wickremesinghe’s leadership has shown a commitment to resolving these issues, with assurances that land rights will be granted to the community by the end of the month as part of the President’s program.
The rally was attended by notable figures including former President of Maldives Mohamed Nasheed, CWC President MP M. Rameshwaran, and other prominent leaders and members of the CWC. Thondaman’s remarks reflected a sense of optimism and confidence in the government’s dedication to fulfilling the rights and needs of the plantation sector workers.
