Dr. Gayashika Fernando’s Empowering Journey in Engineering at SLIIT’s Faculty of Engineering

Dr. Gayashika Fernando, a Senior Lecturer in SLIIT’s Mechanical Engineering Department and the first PhD graduate from SLIIT’s Faculty of Engineering, embodies determination and scholarly excellence. Her academic journey, spanning from a B.Sc. (Hons) in Production Engineering at the University of Peradeniya to an MEng in Manufacturing System Engineering at the University of Moratuwa, reflects her commitment to advancing scientific knowledge. With eight years of industry experience preceding her academic career, Dr. Fernando’s transition to academia was driven by a desire to shape future generations and contribute significantly to engineering education.

Her PhD research on ‘Climate Policy Analysis for Climate Mitigation and Carbon Neutrality’ marked a milestone in SLIIT’s academic achievements. Developing a model to analyze different climate and energy policies, her work provided invaluable insights for national policy development, aligning with global agreements like the Paris Agreement and UNFCCC. Despite challenges posed by limited resources, Dr. Fernando’s collaboration with experienced supervisors, international experts, and SLIIT’s research facilities facilitated high-quality research publication in prestigious journals like ‘Sustainable Production and Consumption.’

As a woman in engineering, Dr. Fernando faced challenges but emphasizes the ample opportunities and contributions women can make in this field. She believes that women’s participation is crucial for bringing diverse perspectives and innovative solutions to engineering challenges. Dr. Fernando’s advice to aspiring women in engineering includes seeking supportive mentors, continuous learning, and self-belief in their unique contributions. SLIIT, with its supportive research environment, flexible approach, and collaborations, stands as an ideal choice for women pursuing engineering studies, fostering inclusive excellence and societal progress in the field.
