Dr. Mahanamahewa Optimistic: New Anti-Corruption Act Set to Curb Bribery and Corruption

Law Professor and Attorney Dr. Prathibha Mahanamahewa emphasized the importance of swiftly implementing new rules and regulations to bolster sustainable economic growth. He stated that alongside the government’s efforts to strengthen law enforcement against theft, there’s an urgent need to enact measures that empower the economy.

Under the current President’s leadership, over 75 new laws have been introduced, leading to significant enhancements in the legal system. Dr. Mahanamahewa highlighted the impact of the Anti-Corruption Act in addressing bribery and corruption, not only in government institutions but also in the private sector.

He underscored the crucial role of legal reforms in attracting both domestic and foreign investments. Dr. Mahanamahewa stressed that foreign investors closely scrutinize a country’s anti-corruption efforts before committing, emphasizing the importance of Sri Lanka’s position in global corruption indices.

To facilitate investment, Dr. Mahanamahewa urged streamlined government processes and emphasized the need to prevent incidents of bribery and corruption. He noted the pivotal role of the new Anti-Corruption Act in ensuring transparency and integrity across institutions, both public and private.
