Embracing Change: Hatton Plantations Revolutionizes Operations

Hatton Plantations PLC is embarking on a transformative journey, embracing digital technologies and empowering its workforce to revolutionize its operations. This ambitious plan, spearheaded by General Manager Waruna Fernando, aims to address several key challenges faced by the Sri Lankan tea industry.

One of the most pressing issues is labor scarcity and low productivity. Recognizing the need for a strategic shift, Fernando emphasizes the importance of expanding mechanized tea harvesting. This initiative will not only address labor shortages, particularly during peak cropping seasons, but also counter the rising cost of labor relative to competitors.

Hatton Plantations is at the forefront of this mechanization effort. They have invested significantly in harvesting machines imported from China, marking a significant step towards a more automated future. However, their commitment to innovation extends beyond technology. In a first for Sri Lanka, Hatton Plantations has appointed women as harvester team leaders. This groundbreaking move fosters a more empowering work environment for female pluckers, who can now voice their concerns and find solutions through these female leaders.

The company is further modernizing the harvesting process through the introduction of digital scales and smart digital identity cards for harvest assistants. These tools not only streamline data collection but also empower employees by providing them with transparent and accurate records of their work. This shift towards digitization reflects Hatton Plantations’ commitment to a more efficient and equitable workplace.

Despite these advancements, challenges remain. The recent ban on chemicals and fertilizers has significantly impacted the industry, and even with the ban lifted, high fertilizer prices pose a new hurdle. To ensure the long-term sustainability of the plantation sector, Fernando calls on the government to provide tax rebates on fuel, electricity, and equipment imports.

Hatton Plantations’ commitment to progress signifies a new era for the Sri Lankan tea industry. By embracing innovative technologies, empowering its workforce, and advocating for industry support, the company is paving the way for a more sustainable and successful future.
