Exams Chief Announces Extra Marks for O/L Science MCQ Paper

Examinations Commissioner General Amith Jayasundara addressed the media yesterday, announcing adjustments to the G.C.E. Ordinary Level Examination 2023 (2024) Science Paper 1. Responding to complaints, it was decided to award one mark each for questions No. 9 and 39, following controversy surrounding the exam.

The decision stemmed from concerns over questions outside essential teachings, which circulated on social media. Jayasundara clarified that during the Covid-19 pandemic, parts of the curriculum were removed as part of the “Recovery Plan for Learning Loss 2022,” aimed at optimizing school time. Although the plan was scheduled until 2023, its recommendations were applied to the 2024 examination.

Addressing the issue, Jayasundara emphasized the adherence to the Recovery Plan’s guidelines, resulting in the additional marks for the two multiple-choice questions. This adjustment aims to ensure fairness and accuracy in evaluating students’ performance, reflecting the department’s commitment to maintaining the integrity of the examination process.
