In response to the widespread devastation caused by recent flooding, the Sri Lankan government has announced a compensation fund of Rs. 100 million to aid farmers affected by crop damage. Agriculture and Plantation Industries Minister Mahinda Amaraweera confirmed the allocation, emphasizing the government’s commitment to supporting those impacted by natural disasters.
Approximately 15,000 acres of paddy fields, along with numerous vegetable cultivation sites, have been severely affected by the floods and heavy rains. The Southern province, renowned for its tea cultivation, has also suffered significant losses due to adverse weather conditions.
Minister Amaraweera highlighted the immediate need for assistance, stating that the Cabinet, under the leadership of the President, has prioritized addressing crop damage. He instructed the Agriculture and Plantation Industries Ministry Secretary, Janaka Dharmakeerthi, to compile a comprehensive report on the extent of the damage.
Furthermore, the Minister expressed concern over potential price hikes in the vegetable market due to the loss of cultivated lands. To mitigate this, he directed the Department of Agricultural Development to initiate gardening programs, aimed at restoring agricultural productivity.
The government’s swift response underscores its commitment to the welfare of farmers and the agricultural sector amidst challenging circumstances. As efforts to provide relief and support to affected farmers are underway, attention remains focused on rebuilding communities and safeguarding livelihoods against future natural disasters.
