IOM Sri Lanka and Defence Ministry Collaborate with SriLankan Airlines for Human Trafficking Awareness Program

In the ongoing fight against human trafficking, aviation emerges as a critical gateway for transporting victims across borders swiftly and frequently. Recognizing the pivotal role of airlines and law enforcement agencies in combating this heinous crime, collaborative efforts are underway to implement measures aimed at recognizing and preventing trafficking incidents. Recently, the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) Sri Lanka, in partnership with the Defence Ministry and SriLankan Airlines, conducted a specialized training program for airline staff to enhance their capacity in identifying, reporting, and responding to human trafficking cases.

The training program, tailored for trainers of SriLankan Airlines, equipped participants with essential knowledge, analytical tools, and resources necessary for effectively identifying and reporting trafficking incidents. With a focus on enhancing awareness and strengthening counter-trafficking measures, participants shared valuable insights and successful encounters in identifying victims of trafficking. Highlighting the unique position of the aviation industry in detecting and reporting trafficking cases, Sarat Dash, IOM Chief of Mission for Sri Lanka, emphasized the importance of equipping airline staff with the requisite skills to address this issue effectively.

Covering various aspects of prevention, identification, and protection of trafficking victims, the training sessions were led by thematic experts from the Defence Ministry, IOM, and the National Child Protection Authority (NCPA). The curriculum incorporated guidelines provided by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) and the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), emphasizing the importance of training cabin crew on identifying and responding to trafficking in persons. By aligning with international standards and best practices, the training aimed to bolster Sri Lanka’s efforts in combating human trafficking and fostering a unified front against this global scourge.

Since 2010, IOM has been actively supporting the Justice Ministry, Defence Ministry, and the National Anti-Human Trafficking Task Force, underscoring its commitment to providing technical assistance and expertise in addressing human trafficking in Sri Lanka. As stakeholders continue to collaborate and build capacity within the aviation sector, efforts to combat human trafficking are strengthened, reaffirming the collective determination to protect vulnerable individuals and uphold human rights.
