Jonty Rhodes Reflects on Sustainable Tourism and Family’s Sri Lanka Surf Trip

Former South African cricketer Jonty Rhodes recently shared insights from his latest travel adventure in Sri Lanka, underscoring the importance of sustainable tourism and local engagement.

In an Instagram post, Rhodes detailed his family’s surf-centric trip to Sri Lanka, where they chose a unique mode of transport to explore the coastline.

Rhodes emphasized the importance of staying close to local communities and respecting the environment, stating, “When you travel through a country, you want to be as close to the local population as possible, in order to benefit the local communities and the environment.”

The Rhodes family used TukTuk Rental, a local company, for their transport needs, praising the social philosophy behind the business. “Seeing as we are seasoned campaigners on the roads of Goa, we decided to get some wheels (two of them) from @tuktukrental Sri Lanka, and get ourselves to the various surf breaks in Ahangama,” he explained.

He further praised TukTuk Rental for leasing vehicles from local owners, which helps ensure that the local community benefits from the tourism industry.

Rhodes expressed his love for the independence that comes with having their own transport, particularly when managing surfboards, and emphasized the importance of supporting responsible travel choices.

Sri Lanka, a favorite surf destination for the Rhodes family, holds a special place for them, and Rhodes expressed optimism for the country’s tourism recovery after recent challenges. “It is great to see the many positive impacts that the tourism industry is once again having on the economy,” he wrote, celebrating the sector’s role in reviving local communities and aiding economic recovery.
