MP Gamini Waleboda has raised urgent concerns regarding the recruitment of retired Sri Lankan military personnel as mercenaries for Russia. Speaking at a press conference, Waleboda highlighted that these retired soldiers are enticed with promising salaries to join Russian military camps, only to be deployed as mercenaries on the front lines. Despite inquiries made to the Russian Embassy in Sri Lanka, it was clarified that the embassy had no direct involvement in these activities, although certain individuals associated with it might be implicated.
Expressing disappointment with the lack of intervention from relevant authorities, Waleboda criticized the Foreign Affairs Ministry, the Sri Lanka Foreign Employment Bureau, and the Immigration Department for their inaction in addressing this serious issue. Moreover, Waleboda met with the families of Sri Lankan military personnel currently serving as mercenaries in the Russian Army, noting that these families remain uninformed about the whereabouts and well-being of their loved ones once deployed.
Highlighting the gravity of the situation, the MP revealed that individuals seeking financial opportunities in Russia have been unwittingly enlisted into the Russian mercenary army, putting their lives at risk. In response, Waleboda submitted written grievances on behalf of approximately 25 to 30 affected families to the Foreign Ministry and brought the matter to the attention of the President’s Secretariat. The calls for urgent action underscore the need for swift intervention to address the welfare and safety concerns of Sri Lankan military personnel and their families involved in such activities abroad.
