Foreign Net Selling Concentrated in NDB as Market Outflow Reaches Rs. 193 Million

A single banking counter accounted for more than the entire net foreign outflow on the Colombo Stock Exchange, while foreign buying elsewhere was minimal.

Foreign investors were net sellers of LKR 193.3 million on the Colombo Stock Exchange (CSE), and nearly all of it came from one stock. National Development Bank (NDB) recorded a net foreign outflow of LKR 195.9 million, slightly more than the market-wide figure.

Excluding NDB, foreign investors were marginally net buyers of about LKR 2.6 million. Foreign purchases totalled LKR 13.7 million against sales of LKR 207.1 million, so sales made up roughly a quarter of the day’s LKR 814.85 million turnover.

Foreign buying elsewhere was small. The largest net foreign purchase in any single stock was LKR 6.2 million in DFCC Bank, followed by Sunshine Holdings at LKR 1.2 million and LOLC Finance at LKR 1.1 million. Among other net foreign sales, DIAL recorded LKR 3.4 million, Watawala LKR 2.1 million and Guardian Capital Partners LKR 1.4 million. All were a fraction of the NDB figure.

NDB was also the largest contributor to turnover, at about LKR 203 million, or roughly 25% of the day’s total. The banking sector as a whole accounted for about 30% of market turnover. The data does not show whether the NDB selling came through a block transaction or many smaller trades, and it gives no reason for the outflow.

The Wider Picture

The day’s figure is small against the longer trend. Net foreign outflows total about LKR 1.5 billion for September so far and LKR 57.3 billion for the year to date. The NDB-driven outflow equals about 13% of the September total and roughly 0.3% of the year-to-date figure.

Foreign flows have also been uneven this month. The market recorded a modest net foreign inflow of LKR 19 million on one session between September 15 and 25, while outflows on other sessions ranged from a few million rupees to more than LKR 200 million. The ASPI closed at 21,037.35, down 0.14%, in a session where overall turnover was about 64% below the monthly average of roughly LKR 2.3 billion.

Business Impact

For investors and finance professionals, the headline outflow figure says little about foreign sentiment toward the market as a whole. Most of it reflects activity in one stock, and a single large seller can dominate the net figure on a thin trading day. Broad-based foreign selling would show up as outflows spread across many counters. Readers tracking foreign participation are better served by the multi-week trend than by any one session.

For NDB shareholders and banking sector watchers, the concentration is worth noting, but the available data does not explain it. Any company announcement or exchange disclosure would be the first place to look for context.
