The Central Disease Control Programme at Colombo National Hospital is set to introduce a novel method for identifying leprosy patients using WhatsApp. Dr. Indira Kahawita, a dermatologist, explained that individuals with suspected leprosy can take a clear picture of the affected area and send it to the leprosy identification helpline number 0754088604 via WhatsApp. This initiative aims to provide free advice under the supervision of dermatologists at the Central Leprosy Clinic of the hospital.
Dr. Kahawita emphasized that certain skin signs like light-colored spots, copper-colored spots, and non-protruding spots could indicate leprosy. She advised concerned individuals to capture clear images of such areas and share them along with details such as age, address, gender, and the duration of the skin condition. She clarified that this service operates as a text message service and not through phone calls.
It was noted that approximately 1,500 new leprosy patients are diagnosed annually, but with timely and proper medication, leprosy can be completely cured. This innovative approach via WhatsApp aims to streamline the identification and guidance process for potential leprosy cases, offering a convenient and accessible way for individuals to seek medical advice and support.
