Northern Province Receives Boost in Development Aid

The Minister of Fisheries, Douglas Devananda, recently announced a significant development for the Northern Province. India, China, and Japan have pledged a combined 4.9 billion rupees in financial assistance to support the region’s growth.

Highlighting the importance of utilizing these funds effectively, Devananda emphasized the need for proper management to ensure maximum benefit for the people. He praised the government’s handling of the recent economic crisis, crediting their leadership with restoring normalcy.

China’s contribution of 1.5 billion rupees will be directed towards housing projects, relief programs, and support for fishermen through the provision of nets and equipment. The agreement for this grant is expected to be finalized during Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardane’s upcoming visit to China on March 22nd.

India has pledged a substantial 3 billion rupees, earmarked for marine research activities and large-scale fish cage culture. Japan’s contribution of 415 million rupees rounds out the total package.

Minister Devananda reiterated the importance of utilizing these funds responsibly, ensuring they benefit both the nation and the people of the Northern Province. This financial aid represents a major opportunity to accelerate development in the region.
