PM Dinesh Gunawardena: Budget Enables Resumption of Development Projects

Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena addressed Parliament on Tuesday, highlighting the resumption of development projects previously stalled for two years due to budget constraints. He underscored the government’s commitment to kickstarting these initiatives, signaling a renewed focus on national development efforts. Additionally, the Prime Minister emphasized the allocation of decentralized funds, Provincial Council funds, and Central Government projects to all members who actively participated in development committees, acknowledging their valuable contributions.

Responding to inquiries raised by MP Dayasiri Jayasekara regarding the circular issued by the President’s Office for the establishment of Community Advisory Committees, the Prime Minister clarified key aspects of the directive. He noted that the circular does not specify the inclusion of candidates competing in Local Government elections as committee members. Instead, the emphasis is placed on leveraging the expertise of rural leaders possessing practical knowledge, such as retired engineers, industrial officers, and professionals from various sectors nationwide, to drive the country’s development agenda.

Gunawardena affirmed the government’s intention to involve educated and responsible individuals from Provincial Councils in these advisory committees, underscoring the importance of their contributions to the nation’s progress. He posed a rhetorical question to the Opposition, questioning whether they would commit to supporting this inclusive approach to development. The Prime Minister’s remarks aimed to reassure Parliament and the public of the government’s dedication to fostering comprehensive and participatory development strategies, leveraging the expertise and insights of diverse stakeholders across the country.
