In a recent directive from President Ranil Wickremesinghe, Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena has been tasked with organizing the Provincial Council Election next year. The instruction includes reverting to the previous election system, with provisions for women’s representation, following consultations with key stakeholders such as the Attorney General, the Election Commissioner, and party leaders.
Cabinet Spokesman and Mass Media Minister Dr. Bandula Gunawardhana conveyed this decision to the media at the Government Information Department, highlighting the President’s emphasis on ensuring the inclusion of women in the electoral process. Furthermore, the Premier has been instructed to explore the possibility of nullifying nominations accepted for the postponed 2023 Local Government election, seeking legal counsel on the matter from the Attorney General.
President Wickremesinghe’s directive also underscores the need for dialogue with political parties regarding the annulment of accepted nominations. This move is motivated by concerns over the challenges faced by government employees who participated in the Local Government election nominations, impacting their work and other engagements. Moreover, Minister Gunawardhana confirmed that the Presidential Election is slated to proceed this year, with allocated funds already in place to support the electoral process.
This directive signals a proactive approach by the government to address electoral concerns and ensure the smooth functioning of democratic processes, underscoring its commitment to inclusive governance and electoral integrity.
