ReturnShip Alliance has been launched as Sri Lanka’s first holistic returnship ecosystem, aiming to reconnect skilled professionals returning from career breaks with meaningful employment while helping small businesses access affordable and reliable back-office services.

ReturnShip Alliance introduces Sri Lanka’s first returnship ecosystem for skilled professionals

Introduced by The Training Lab Pvt. Ltd., the initiative is designed to create opportunities for professionals who have stepped away from conventional employment, including carers, retired professionals and differently abled individuals. By combining structured training with a collaborative work model, the programme seeks to bridge the gap between experienced talent and businesses looking for quality operational support.

At the centre of ReturnShip Alliance is a workforce model built around small collaborative teams known as Pods. Each Pod consists of four to five professionals working together to deliver outsourced and fractional back-office services, including finance, administration and operational support, to micro, small and medium-sized enterprises.

Every Pod is led by a dedicated team leader responsible for managing client relationships, maintaining service quality and ensuring accountability across projects. This structure enables professionals to return to the workforce on Flexible work arrangements while giving businesses access to dependable support through organised teams rather than individual freelancers.

The initiative is based on the belief that professional expertise does not disappear when individuals take career breaks. Instead, it recognises that many experienced professionals leave the workforce because traditional employment structures often fail to accommodate changing personal responsibilities or life circumstances.

To support a successful return to employment, participants undergo structured training and career facilitation programmes that help rebuild confidence, refresh technical skills and prepare them for client-facing roles. At the same time, employer partners receive onboarding and training to better understand how the Pod model operates and how to maximise its value.

According to The Training Lab, this dual approach transforms the initiative into a genuine partnership between professionals and businesses rather than a conventional staffing solution.

A key feature of the programme is its commitment to inclusivity. ReturnShip Alliance welcomes professionals regardless of age, gender or geographic location and is designed to include differently abled individuals. By removing traditional employment barriers, the initiative opens opportunities for skilled professionals across Sri Lanka, including those living outside major commercial centres.

Speaking at the launch, Shivalatha Sivasundaram, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of The Training Lab Pvt. Ltd., said the initiative was inspired by the untapped potential of experienced professionals seeking a pathway back into meaningful employment.

“ReturnShip Alliance was born from a simple observation that Sri Lanka is full of skilled professionals who’ve had to step back from their careers, not because they lack ability, but because the system never offered them a flexible way back in,” she said.

“The Pod model gives people a real, structured path to restart their professional journeys on their terms, and I’m grateful to be building it alongside a team that believes in that same vision.”

Technology also plays a central role in supporting the initiative. Shiraz Safaideen, the independent consultant leading the technology infrastructure and operational support for the project, said the platform has been designed to help Pods operate efficiently while allowing professionals to focus on delivering value to clients.

He noted that the technology stack has been built to support future expansion, enabling the model to scale from its initial rollout in Sri Lanka to planned international growth through a franchise-style approach.

For SMEs, SME support offered by the programme provides a practical alternative to recruiting full-time administrative staff. Businesses can access experienced professionals through flexible service arrangements while benefiting from the reliability and accountability of a structured team environment.

The launch represents the first phase of a broader growth strategy for The Training Lab Pvt. Ltd. The company plans to establish the model successfully in Sri Lanka before expanding into international markets through a franchise-style licensing framework.

As organisations increasingly embrace flexible employment models, ReturnShip Alliance seeks to address two important challenges simultaneously—creating new career opportunities for experienced professionals and delivering affordable, high-quality operational services that help small businesses grow sustainably. The initiative reflects a growing shift towards more inclusive employment practices while demonstrating how innovation can unlock skilled talent that might otherwise remain outside the workforce.
