Rupavahini, a national television channel in Sri Lanka, made history on May 5 by presenting a Sinhala news program using Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology. This groundbreaking move marked the first instance of AI technology being employed in news telecasting within the country. Just five days later, on May 10, Rupavahini extended the use of AI to its Tamil prime time news bulletin, once again leading the way in AI integration in Sri Lankan media.
During these broadcasts, Rupavahini utilized AI technology to create replicas of renowned TV anchors, C.B.M. Shiyam and Theeba Dharshani, adding a unique and futuristic dimension to their news telecasts. A significant portion of the news content was presented using these AI-generated replicas, offering viewers a novel experience with the latest advancements in technology. The production of these broadcasts was overseen by Gamini Bandara Menikdiwela, guided by National Television Chairman Dr. Prasad Samarasinghe, and under the direction of News Director Indika Marasinghe.
This initiative represents Rupavahini’s commitment to exploring innovative approaches in news broadcasting, paving the way for future advancements in utilizing AI technology. The television station aims to continue offering new and engaging experiences to its audience by leveraging the capabilities of AI in upcoming broadcasts and programs.
