SLEA Hosts Panel on Path from Debt Default to Growth

A new chapter for Sri Lanka’s economic growth unfolded yesterday as the Sri Lanka Economic Association (SLEA), in collaboration with ODI Global, hosted a book launch and expert panel discussion at the University of Colombo.

The event celebrated the publication of “Sri Lanka: From Debt Default to Transformative Growth”, a collection of 14 essays by 24 prominent Sri Lankan and international experts. Edited by ODI Global Visiting Senior Fellow Dr. Ganeshan Wignaraja and ODI Global International Economic Development Group Director Prof. Dirk Willem te Velde, the book outlines 27 actionable policy proposals to guide Sri Lanka towards sustainable and inclusive economic transformation.

“This book is not just about theory,” said Dr. Wignaraja. “It is a practical roadmap with concrete solutions for achieving lasting economic prosperity.”

Key Themes Discussed:

  1. Ensuring debt sustainability and promoting fiscal responsibility for long-term stability.
  2. Fostering cross-party consensus to enhance policy consistency and investor confidence.
  3. Strengthening economic diplomacy and attracting investment to boost growth.

The distinguished panel featured contributions from leading experts, including Dr. Ganeshan Wignaraja, Prof. Dirk Willem te Velde, and University of Colombo Emeritus Professor of Economics Dr. Sirimal Abeyratne. Central Bank of Sri Lanka Assistant Governor Dr. Chandranath Amarasekara delivered a video address, emphasizing the significance of youth involvement in shaping the nation’s economic trajectory.

“This event has empowered the next generation of leaders to contribute to Sri Lanka’s development,” noted Prof. Rev. W. Wimalaratana, President of SLEA, who moderated the discussions.

The event highlighted the resilience of Sri Lanka in recovering from its 2022 economic crisis and its readiness to embark on a transformative journey toward prosperity. Attendees expressed enthusiasm for the actionable insights offered by the book and the collaborative approach necessary for sustained growth.
