Grand finale celebrates innovation, AI, and youth-driven tech excellence
In a groundbreaking display of innovation and collaboration, SLT-Mobitel elevated the IESL Robo Games 2024 into a national celebration of robotics and technological talent. The grand finale, held recently, showcased a new generation of problem-solvers, programmers, and roboticists, positioning Sri Lanka as an emerging powerhouse for robotics and artificial intelligence in the region.
More than just a corporate sponsor, SLT-Mobitel took an active role in transforming the event into a cutting-edge tech platform. Partnering with the Institution of Engineers Sri Lanka (IESL) and the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Moratuwa, SLT-Mobitel provided technological infrastructure, on-ground expertise, and immersive learning opportunities that supported participants from across the country.
The event brought together school children, university students, and young innovators from across Sri Lanka to compete in building and programming autonomous robots to complete complex real-world tasks. As part of its commitment, SLT-Mobitel deployed a dedicated technical team that ensured high-speed connectivity and troubleshooting assistance, while also helping design a competition environment aligned with global standards.
In the run-up to the competition, participants benefited from a series of workshops and training sessions. These included “Mastering Webots,” an introduction to the industry-standard robotics simulation platform, and “Kobuki Robots in Motion,” which offered hands-on experience with physical robot systems. Specialised modules in testing and troubleshooting helped teams fine-tune their robotic designs for maximum performance.
The grand finale was a high-energy showcase of ingenuity and skill. In the School Category, Team GOAT 12000 from Elizabeth Moir Senior School took the championship, featuring Tharul Sandinu Senanayake, Kavindu Sankalpana Rasanjana Pathirage, and Maleeka Sanketh Raddygala. The University Category was won by Team AutoNova from the University of Moratuwa, represented by Shehan Sudeepa Perera, Tharusha Dilshan Bandara, and Dhawala Sanka Rajakaruna. In the Open Category, Team OG Nemesis emerged victorious, with standout performances from Subash Tissera, Shahan Piumantha, Ranneth Udawatta, Tharana Chandrapala, and Mahela Sadaruwan.
SLT-Mobitel’s Deputy Chief Marketing Officer – Product Management, Eng. Rohana Ellawala, served as the Guest of Honor at the awards ceremony. In his remarks, he underscored the vital role robotics plays in Sri Lanka’s evolving tech ecosystem and emphasized the importance of empowering youth with the skills to shape future industries.
Through initiatives like IESL Robo Games 2024, SLT-Mobitel continues to drive its vision of a digitally empowered Sri Lanka. The event stands as a testament to the company’s strategy of investing in innovation ecosystems and supporting young minds to compete on the global stage.
