Sri Lanka and India Launch High-Tech Agricultural Warehouse and Solar Plant

Sri Lanka’s President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi have virtually inaugurated a state-of-the-art agricultural warehouse and solar power plant, marking a significant step in strengthening bilateral cooperation between the two nations.

The solar power plant, located in Trincomalee, is a joint venture between India’s NTPS and Sri Lanka’s Ceylon Electricity Board. The plant is set to supply clean energy to the national grid, contributing to Sri Lanka’s renewable energy goals.

Meanwhile, the advanced, environmentally controlled agricultural warehouse in Dambulla aims to modernize Sri Lanka’s agricultural supply chain, improving storage conditions for perishables and reducing waste. This warehouse, the largest of its kind in the country, is expected to benefit farmers by providing them with a more efficient and sustainable way to store their products.

Prime Minister Modi emphasized the importance of the project, stating, “Today, we have also set up the largest warehouses in Sri Lanka for the benefit of farmers.” The agricultural warehouse was originally initiated in 2019 by opposition legislator Harsha de Silva, highlighting cross-party support for such initiatives.

Strengthening Sri Lanka-India Ties

The launch of these projects is part of a broader collaboration between Sri Lanka and India in sectors like health, energy, and defense. The two countries have signed multiple agreements to further enhance cooperation, underscoring their commitment to mutual development and regional stability.
