Sri Lanka Farmers Demand Rs. 140 for Paddy Kilo, 60% Above Thailand’s Rates

Sri Lankan farmers have called for a paddy purchase price of Rs. 130 to 140 per kilogram this harvest season, Deputy Minister of Agriculture Namal Karunaratne revealed after meeting farming organizations.

Karunaratne reaffirmed his earlier promise to ensure a price 30% above the cost of production, emphasizing a commitment to fair compensation for farmers. He stated, “Our farmer organizations have calculated, and the government agencies are also determining production costs. We will ensure justice for farmers.”

Farmers report that millers are currently purchasing rice at Rs. 135 per kilogram, although concerns remain about price reductions later in the season. Large-scale harvesting is expected to begin in February.

Comparisons with Thailand, a leading rice exporter, highlight Sri Lankan farmers’ demands as significantly higher. Thai farmgate prices for paddy with 15% moisture range from 75 to 86 rupees per kilogram, with freshly harvested paddy priced between 66 and 75 rupees.

Sri Lanka’s rice prices remain elevated due to a 65-rupee import tax, shielding farmers from international competition while raising consumer costs. Despite economic challenges, including a currency crisis in 2022, the government maintained import taxes, contributing to the country’s higher food prices.
