The Sri Lanka Export Development Board (EDB) recently hosted a high-level meeting with Swiss officials to advance bilateral trade relations. Ambassador of Switzerland to Sri Lanka and the Maldives, Dr. Siri Walt, met with EDB Chairman and CEO Mangala Wijesinghe to explore new avenues for economic cooperation between the two nations.
During the meeting, Wijesinghe presented Sri Lanka’s comprehensive Export Development Plan, emphasizing initiatives such as expanding the export product range, enhancing value addition, and reactivating the Export Development Council of Ministers (EDCM). These measures aim to remove bottlenecks in the export industry and drive sustainable growth.
Wijesinghe also highlighted the importance of political stability and good governance under the new Sri Lankan Government, which he said are critical to strengthening investor confidence. He further noted that the consolidation of key institutions under the Ministry of Industries and Entrepreneurship Development has significantly improved decision-making and implementation processes.
In expressing appreciation to Switzerland, Wijesinghe acknowledged the country’s support in conducting market research for targeted export sectors and the successful implementation of the Global Textile Program (GTEX) in Sri Lanka. This program has notably supported small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the textile and apparel sectors. He also identified knowledge-sharing, innovation, and sustainable trade practices as key areas for future collaboration.
Dr. Walt congratulated the Sri Lankan Government on peaceful elections and reaffirmed Switzerland’s support for Sri Lanka’s ongoing IMF program. She emphasized the growing importance of transparency and traceability in global trade and the need for a corruption-free business environment to attract foreign investment, particularly in the tourism sector.
She expressed strong support for Sri Lanka’s Business Circle initiative, highlighting its role in connecting local entrepreneurs with international networks and fostering knowledge exchange. Dr. Walt also announced plans for a Swiss business delegation to visit Sri Lanka in June 2025, aiming to deepen commercial ties through forums and B2B meetings.
Additionally, the EDB sought Switzerland’s assistance in organizing “Sri Lanka Expo,” scheduled for June 2026, which will serve as a global platform to showcase Sri Lanka’s export potential.
The meeting concluded with a mutual commitment to maintain regular dialogue and collaboration, reinforcing both countries’ dedication to enhancing trade and economic partnerships. The EDB continues to focus on elevating Sri Lanka’s role in global markets while nurturing strategic international relationships.
