Sri Lanka Takes Key Step Toward Digital Economy with Japanese Support

Sri Lanka has made a significant move toward its digital transformation with the signing of a consultant contract for the Digital Terrestrial Television Broadcasting Project. This milestone was achieved last week between Dr. Anil Jasinghe, Secretary to the Ministry of Health and Mass Media, and Yachiyo Engineering, a Japanese company.

The event, held in the presence of key government officials, including Health and Mass Media Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa, Deputy Minister of Finance and Planning Dr. Harshana Suriyapperuma, Deputy Minister of Digital Economy Eng. Eranga Weeraratne, and Ambassador of Japan to Sri Lanka, Mr. Akio Isomata, marks a pivotal moment for Sri Lanka’s digital future.

The project is designed to support the country’s transition to a digital economy, aiming to maximize the use of limited frequencies while promoting sustainable economic growth. Additionally, it will enhance public access to diverse content, including vital information on natural disasters and other alerts, thus improving citizens’ lives. The initiative also seeks to foster a competitive environment in Sri Lanka’s broadcasting industry.

Ambassador Isomata, in his remarks, emphasized the urgency of implementing the project without further delays. He noted that it took 10 years from the signing of the bilateral agreement between Japan and Sri Lanka before the consultant contract was officially sealed. The Ambassador expressed hope that all involved parties will collaborate closely to ensure the project’s successful and timely completion, ultimately contributing to Sri Lanka’s broader digital economy ambitions.
