Sri Lanka’s cabinet of ministers has approved a proposal to import 30,000 metric tons of non-iodized salt in response to a potential shortage expected in the first quarter of 2025. Minister Nalinda Jayatissa confirmed the decision, attributing the shortage risk to adverse weather conditions that could affect domestic salt production, particularly in the industrial sector.
Salt manufacturers have raised concerns about the impending shortage and requested permission to import salt to ensure supply continuity. The non-iodized raw salt will be imported by the State Trading Corporation and subsequently distributed to local salt manufacturers to meet domestic demand.
This move is aimed at mitigating supply gaps and stabilizing the salt market as the country anticipates challenges in salt production due to weather-related factors.
