Sri Lanka tourism gains momentum with German collaboration on sustainable travel
Sri Lanka tourism is set to strengthen through closer ties with Germany following the Sri Lankan-German Tourism Conference 2025, organized by AHK Sri Lanka under the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy’s Market Entry Program. The event brought together industry experts, government officials, and tourism professionals to promote sustainable and innovative growth in the sector.
Martin Klose, Chief Delegate of AHK Sri Lanka, emphasized that Germany continues to be one of Sri Lanka’s most important tourism source markets and that the conference reaffirmed the potential for deeper cooperation. The program featured panel discussions, expert presentations, and company pitches aimed at creating fresh opportunities for both countries.
One panel explored how Sri Lanka can meet the expectations of German travelers, with insights from Siddhalepa Ayurveda, Hilton Colombo Residences, Aitken Spence Travels, and AHK Sri Lanka. Another panel, titled “Sri Lanka: The New Sustainable Bali?”, focused on regenerative tourism and included contributions from The Curious Experience, Kitesurfing Lanka, Walkers Tours, and Cinnamon Life.
German delegates from AquaRockBag, Claussen Holding GmbH, mascontour GmbH, SUNSET Energietechnik GmbH, Suvarivi Ayurveda Resort, and Mareike Brandt presented solutions and innovations designed to enhance tourism offerings. Expert talks highlighted the potential of MICE tourism, training and education, AI applications, and diversity and inclusion in tourism.
A regional spotlight on Jaffna drew attention to untapped opportunities in the Northern Province, signaling a push to diversify tourism beyond traditional hotspots. According to AHK Sri Lanka, the event positioned Sri Lanka as a forward-looking destination that combines sustainability with authentic experiences for German travelers.
With Germany already playing a vital role in arrivals, the renewed partnership is expected to give Sri Lanka tourism a stronger presence in European markets, while fostering long-term cooperation on sustainable travel development.
