Discover Sri Lanka’s Coffee Journey on the Coffee Heritage Trail
Sri Lanka has officially unveiled its new initiative, the Coffee Heritage Trail, offering tourists a unique opportunity to explore the island’s historical connection to coffee cultivation. Launched in collaboration with Tree of Life Nature Resort in the picturesque city of Kandy, located in the central hills of Sri Lanka, this trail invites visitors on an immersive 1.5-kilometer journey through the island’s rich coffee heritage. From the origins of coffee cultivation to the intricacies of the brewing process, the Coffee Heritage Trail promises an unforgettable experience for coffee enthusiasts.
Reviving Sri Lanka’s Coffee Culture and Global Presence
The Coffee Heritage Trail is part of efforts to revitalize Sri Lanka’s coffee industry and boost its global presence. Shelton Thenuwara, Founder of Tree of Life, believes the trail will diversify Sri Lanka’s offerings and elevate its coffee worldwide. After setbacks from leaf rust in the 19th century, Sri Lanka’s coffee industry has made a strong recovery, aided by initiatives like Australia’s Market Development Facility (MDF), helping Ceylon coffee gain both local and international recognition.

An Educational Journey from Bean to Cup
The Coffee Heritage Trail offers visitors an immersive experience, starting with a tour of the coffee nursery and covering key stages of cultivation, from seed selection to processing. Visitors also learn about traditional and modern roasting techniques and enjoy guided coffee tastings with expert baristas. A highlight of the trail is the chance to plant their own coffee tree, fostering a personal connection to Sri Lanka’s growing coffee industry.
Boosting Tourism and Export Opportunities
Beyond enhancing the tourist experience, the Coffee Heritage Trail is also a strategic move to boost the export potential of Sri Lanka’s coffee. By educating visitors about the country’s unique coffee culture, this initiative aims to increase global awareness and demand for Ceylon coffee. This effort not only highlights the island’s rich agricultural traditions but also serves as a catalyst for both economic growth and the international recognition of Sri Lanka’s coffee as a premium product on the world stage.
