The High Commission of Sri Lanka in Singapore, in partnership with the National Gem and Jewellery Authority of Sri Lanka (NGJA), organized the Sri Lanka pavilion at the 19th Singapore International Jewellery Expo (SIJE) 2024. The event took place from July 11 to 14 at Marina Bay Sands, Singapore.
Four Sri Lankan companies—Cara Jewellers, Ceylon Shine Gems, Raw Ceylon Sapphire, and Sunshine Gems and Jewellers—represented Sri Lanka, showcasing an array of exquisite products.
This year’s SIJE featured over 300 companies from 35 countries, presenting more than $250 million worth of gems and jewellery. The Sri Lankan High Commissioner to Singapore, Senarath Dissanayake, participated in the ribbon-cutting ceremony with Guest of Honour, Singapore Trade and Industry State Minister Alvin Tan, and other dignitaries.
State Minister Tan also visited the Sri Lanka pavilion, where he admired a range of Sri Lankan semi-precious and precious stones, including blue sapphire, ruby, amethyst, alexandrite, and tourmaline.
A highlight of the exhibition was a Sri Lankan-origin natural royal blue sapphire, over 100 carats in size, valued at $3 million. This gem, cut in Bangkok and exhibited by a Singaporean jeweller, is among only five available worldwide.
The Singapore Jewellers Association noted that the local jewellery market is growing, with increasing demand for exceptional craftsmanship, unique designs, and a blend of traditional artistry with modern aesthetics.
SIJE continues to be a crucial platform for expanding market reach and international exposure. Sri Lanka exported $144.58 million worth of goods to Singapore in 2022, with 19% being semi-precious and precious stones, highlighting the potential for Sri Lankan gem products in the Singaporean market.
