Sri Lanka’s Hambantota Industrial Park Secures $25 Million Mattress Export Investment

Sri Lanka’s Hambantota International Port Group (HIPG) has secured a $25 million investment to establish a mattress manufacturing factory in its China-backed industrial park. The facility, set to produce sponge mattresses, will export an estimated 7,000 containers annually.

Comfort Mattress Lanka, the company behind the project, plans to construct a 62,000-square-meter factory under a 30-year renewable lease agreement with HIPG. The factory will source raw materials through a global supply chain spanning Southeast Asia and China, while manufacturing and exporting the final products from Sri Lanka.

The Hambantota Port’s container terminal will play a pivotal role in supporting operations, offering transshipment services to firms within the industrial zone. Wilson Qu, Chief Executive of HIPG, emphasized the strategic importance of the port.

“The container yard we are developing will handle transshipment and strengthen HIP’s positioning as a gateway port,” he stated. “We anticipate heightened interest in the industrial park over the coming years, and as Sri Lanka’s economy stabilizes, we foresee industries outside the port taking advantage of HIP’s strategic location.”

The project is also expected to create significant local employment opportunities. To maximize these benefits, HIPG plans to train youth in the Hambantota district and neighboring areas in technical and mechanical skills, ensuring a skilled workforce to support ongoing and future investments.
