State Minister Pramitha Bandara Tennakoon has reiterated the government’s commitment to combatting human trafficking, emphasizing strict enforcement of the law regardless of social status. Speaking at a media briefing under the theme “Collective Path to a Stable Country,” Tennakoon highlighted the imposition of severe penalties on offenders.
During the briefing, Tennakoon disclosed the arrest of a group of suspects, including a retired senior military officer, on suspicion of involvement in human trafficking. These individuals allegedly recruited retired Army personnel for service in the Russian-Ukraine war, prompting legal proceedings against them.
The State Minister emphasized the government’s vigilance regarding Sri Lankan armed forces personnel engaged in foreign conflicts. He revealed that President Ranil Wickremesinghe and security chiefs were briefed on the matter during a recent Security Council meeting.
Tennakoon stated that 288 complaints have been lodged regarding this issue, leading to arrests and legal action against suspects. The government remains resolute in its stance against human trafficking, ensuring justice for victims and accountability for perpetrators.
