Power and Energy State Minister Indika Anuruddha Herath emphasized the stability and safety of the Uma Oya Development Project, stating that since its transfer to public ownership, there have been no reported landslides or issues. He cautioned against misleading narratives, pointing out that some are attempting to mislead the public by highlighting minor waterfalls due to rainfall. A team of geologists recently conducted an observational tour of the Uma Oya region to assess and document any reported cracks or floods.
During a media briefing at the PMC under the theme ‘Collective Path to a Stable Country,’ State Minister Anuruddha highlighted the significant economic losses incurred due to delays in completing the Uma Oya Project, amounting to nearly US$ 200 billion over nine years. Despite the project’s delay, electricity generation could not be integrated into the national grid, resulting in substantial losses. The State Minister assured technical solutions for any identified issues, drawing from global prevention measures.
He also addressed the importance of renewable energy sources, with a policy directive to source 70 percent of electricity production from renewable sources. Initiatives have been launched to expedite projects generating electricity from wind or solar power, crucial for averting potential electricity crises. Additionally, measures are in place to combat delays caused by groups hindering power plant licenses and to boost rooftop solar panel projects’ output.
