Finance State Minister Dr. Ranjith Siyambalapitiya revealed that despite the official suspension of foreign debt payments, Sri Lanka has paid US$ 2.5 billion in 2022 and US$ 2.6 billion in 2023. The Minister highlighted that the country continues to make substantial annual payments, with an average of around US$ 2.5 billion, although only bilateral foreign debt payments have been temporarily suspended. Prior to the suspension, Sri Lanka was paying approximately US$ 5 billion annually towards its foreign debt obligations.
Dr. Siyambalapitiya emphasized the government’s commitment to maintaining strict financial discipline, noting that these decisions, although not always popular, are made with the nation’s long-term economic strength in mind. He reiterated the government’s dedication to improving Sri Lanka’s economic standing, aiming to build a robust economy that benefits its citizens and ensures the country’s stability and growth.
