State Minister Urges Further Steps to Enhance Sri Lanka’s Nighttime Economy for Tourist Appeal

State Tourism Minister Diana Gamage of Sri Lanka has highlighted the progress made in night-time economic activities but stressed the need for further steps to attract tourists to the island nation. Since assuming office, Gamage has actively promoted night-time tourism initiatives to diversify options for foreign visitors.

Addressing reporters in Colombo, Gamage expressed satisfaction with developments in night-time tourism, including extended operating hours for wine stores until 10 PM and restaurant bars in five-star hotels allowed to operate until 2 AM, a significant extension compared to previous regulations that mandated closure by 11 PM. These measures aim to boost tax revenue through excise duties and enhance the overall dining and entertainment experience for tourists.

Gamage emphasized the importance of relaxed regulations on nightlife to stimulate economic activities, particularly in beach areas that could serve as major tourist attractions. She highlighted the growing presence of street food vendors operating late into the night, catering to tourists and contributing to the vibrancy of night-time activities. Looking ahead, Gamage advocated for more open events like concerts, extended operating hours for malls and shops, and even 24-hour establishments to align with international tourism standards and further enhance Sri Lanka’s appeal as a tourism hub.
