Seven regional tea plantation companies and the Sri Lanka Tourism Alliance have joined hands to establish the Pekoe Trail Destination Management Organisation (DMO), marking a significant collaboration between the tea and tourism sectors. The formation of this DMO, facilitated by the Tourism Resilience Project, reflects a pioneering effort to ensure the long-term sustainability and effective management of the 300km Pekoe Trail. This trail, renowned internationally for its wellness and nature-based travel experiences, is poised to promote environmental sustainability while fostering the social and commercial well-being of the communities it traverses.
As the first independent, private sector-led entity to manage a tourism experience in Sri Lanka, the Pekoe Trail DMO sets a precedent for sustainable tourism management. By striking a balance among diverse stakeholders’ interests, it serves as a model for future sustainable tourism initiatives in the country. Endorsed by the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority, the DMO ensures adherence to local laws and regulations, thereby enhancing donor confidence and facilitating future funding opportunities.
This collaborative approach underscores a shared commitment to advancing national interests through joint initiatives, with a focus on managing, maintaining, and promoting the Pekoe Trail through a commercial lens. The DMO’s inclusive framework considers the interests of various stakeholders, including regional plantation companies, government entities, and donor organizations, fostering a conducive environment for the trail’s preservation and promotion. With generous support from the European Union and USAID, the Pekoe Trail promises an immersive experience for travellers seeking to explore the authentic charm of Sri Lanka, with phased openings commencing in November 2024.
