The agreements were announced in Paris during the official visit of Vietnam’s General Secretary and President To Lam to France, reinforcing Vietjet’s cooperation with two major international aerospace partners. The initiatives also form part of broader economic, industrial and technology cooperation between Vietnam and France.
For Vietjet, the expanded partnerships are aimed at strengthening the technical infrastructure required to support a larger and increasingly international fleet. The airline’s network includes direct operations between Colombo and Ho Chi Minh City, providing an important air link between Sri Lanka and Vietnam.
Under a new agreement with Thales, Vietjet will receive comprehensive aircraft component maintenance services through a Repair-By-The-Hour (RBTH) contract. The arrangement covers Vietjet’s Airbus fleet, including A320 and A321 aircraft as well as the A321neo, A321XLR, A330 and A330neo.
The aircraft covered by the agreement are part of the Airbus family operated by Vietjet on its international network, including aircraft serving its Colombo route. By expanding access to specialised component maintenance, the airline expects to improve technical reliability and aircraft availability while managing maintenance costs and operational efficiency.
The partnership also extends beyond traditional MRO activities. Vietjet and Thales have signed a Memorandum of Understanding covering digital aviation, avionics, cybersecurity and artificial intelligence-enhanced airline operations.
The cooperation is expected to explore technologies such as secure cloud solutions, predictive analytics and decision-support systems. These tools can support airlines in areas including operational planning, maintenance management and data-driven decision-making, while cybersecurity capabilities are becoming increasingly important as aviation systems become more digitally connected.
Nguyen Thanh Son, CEO of Vietjet, said the partnership with Thales would strengthen the reliability, safety and operational efficiency of the airline’s fleet while opening new areas of cooperation in digital technology, AI and cybersecurity.
The expanded relationship represents a broader shift in the aviation industry, where airlines are increasingly combining conventional maintenance capabilities with digital technologies to improve operational performance. For a fast-growing carrier, access to predictive and data-driven systems can also play a role in managing a larger fleet and more complex international operations.
Alongside its cooperation with Thales, Vietjet has signed a Letter of Intent with CFM International to examine the feasibility of developing its own solution for LEAP engine maintenance, repair and overhaul capabilities in Vietnam.
The initiative focuses on the latest generation of LEAP engines, which power a significant number of narrow-body aircraft used by airlines worldwide. Assessing domestic LEAP engine MRO capabilities could allow Vietjet to build greater technical expertise and maintenance capacity within Vietnam over the longer term.
The CFM International agreement is at the feasibility-assessment stage, meaning further technical and commercial evaluation will be required before any full-scale MRO capability is established. However, the initiative highlights Vietjet’s interest in developing a more comprehensive aviation maintenance ecosystem alongside its fleet expansion.
The combined agreements demonstrate how Vietjet is seeking to strengthen several layers of its aviation infrastructure at the same time. Aircraft component support, engine maintenance, avionics, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence and digital aviation technologies are increasingly interconnected as airlines manage larger fleets and expand international networks.
For Sri Lankan travellers and the wider aviation market, the developments are also relevant because Vietjet operates a direct connection between Colombo and Ho Chi Minh City. Improvements in fleet maintenance, aircraft availability and digital operational systems could support the airline’s ability to maintain and develop international services as its network grows.
The new agreements also deepen industrial and technology links between Vietnam and France.
