WAA Unveils Cutting-Edge Vehicle Assembly Plant in Kuliyapitiya with $27 Million Investment

Western Automobile Assembly Private Limited (WAA) has proudly announced the opening of its advanced SKD assembly plant in Kuliyapitiya. This state-of-the-art facility, representing a significant investment of approximately USD 27 million, is set to revolutionize local vehicle assembly operations. The plant’s first assembled vehicle, a 15-seater passenger van, is expected to roll out by the end of the month.

The new SKD assembly plant marks a milestone in local automotive manufacturing, contributing to economic development in Sri Lanka while fostering skills and knowledge among the nation’s youth. Operating under the Board of Investment (BOI), the facility boasts a design by global automotive experts and features premium international machinery. It employs lean manufacturing principles and a flexible setup, capable of accommodating multiple vehicle brands while adhering to international safety and quality standards.

WAA’s commitment to local development is evident in its hiring practices, with over 100 employees already onboard, including graduates in Automobile Engineering and Diploma holders in Automobile Technology. Additionally, 25 employees have been recruited for roles in HR, Administration, and Maintenance. The company has also formed partnerships with local service providers in security, logistics, transport, catering, and laundering, enhancing the economic impact on the local community.

Furthermore, WAA is dedicated to training and development, having established an onsite training institute of international standards. This initiative aims to provide vocational training aligned with global industry requirements, creating significant employment opportunities for young professionals both locally and internationally. This project not only boosts the automotive sector but also reinforces the economic vitality of Sri Lanka.
