The Women’s Chamber of Industry and Commerce (WCIC), in partnership with the Colombo Stock Exchange (CSE), recently celebrated its 40th anniversary by ringing the bell, symbolizing four decades of empowering women in business.
Founded in 1985 by a group of visionary female leaders, WCIC has been at the forefront of integrating women entrepreneurs into Sri Lanka’s mainstream business landscape. Over the years, the chamber has played a pivotal role in fostering female-led enterprises, promoting economic contributions, and breaking barriers for women in business.
WCIC aims to serve as a “think tank,” “voice,” and “platform” for women entrepreneurs, championing their participation in Sri Lanka’s economic transformation. CSE CEO Designate Vindhya Jayasekera emphasized the critical role women-led businesses play in job creation, innovation, and sustainable economic growth, highlighting their impact on diverse industries and dynamic labor markets.
WCIC Chairperson Gayani De Alwis reflected on the chamber’s journey, noting that WCIC was officially incorporated on March 5, 1985, as the world’s first women-owned chamber. To mark the milestone, WCIC has launched a series of initiatives, including a commemorative walk, mentorship programs, member engagement activities, and the 40 Under 40 Women Entrepreneur Development Program.
With 67% of its members being women entrepreneurs and 33% business professionals, WCIC remains committed to female entrepreneurship, leadership, and professional development. By driving sustainable businesses and advocating for women’s economic participation, WCIC continues to shape Sri Lanka’s business landscape, reinforcing its legacy of empowerment and growth.
