Synex International (Pvt) Ltd, a Sri Lankan company based in Kohuwela, has come a long way since its inception in 1999. Starting with a mere five employees, Synex has grown into a market leader in the Mechanical and Electrical Engineering (M&E) sector, boasting a local and international workforce of nearly 200.
Founded by R.P.P. Senarathne, an engineer by profession, Synex initially focused on assisting apparel factory construction. Their first major project involved building a world-class manufacturing plant for Star Garments Group in the Katunayake Export Processing Zone (EPZ). This marked the beginning of a long-standing relationship, with Synex completing over 20 projects for Star Garments over the past 25 years.
Synex’s ambitions extended beyond Sri Lanka. In 2002, they ventured into overseas projects, their first being a mega contract in Bangladesh awarded by the Hirdaramani Group. This success story continued, solidifying Synex’s position as a dominant leader in M&E services and related segments, not just locally but globally. Their impressive track record in Bangladesh, Maldives, India, Vietnam, Kenya, and Ethiopia led to them being offered projects by local companies who recognized their world-class capabilities.
This international expansion resulted in the establishment of regional offices in Vietnam, Maldives, and Ethiopia. Bangladesh proved to be a particularly strong market, prompting Synex to open an assembly plant there to further strengthen their competitive edge.
Senira Senarathne, the company’s CEO and second-generation leader since 2016, highlights the importance of client retention. Companies like Star Garments continue to rely on Synex for maintenance work and new ventures, a testament to the quality of service provided. Synex’s annual turnover reflects this success, reaching a phenomenal USD 17 million with a consistent 20% year-on-year growth. The company anticipates a further increase to USD 20 million by the end of the next financial year, driven by the resumption of stalled projects in Sri Lanka.
Synex International has faced challenges, particularly during the pandemic and the subsequent economic crisis. Import restrictions and project downsizing impacted their operations; however, they persevered without resorting to staff reductions.
Their commitment to quality and safety is evident in their achievements. Synex has earned the ISO Certificate 9001 2015, US Green Building Council Membership, and the prestigious Safety Assurance Gold Award from Leighton Contractors Germany. They have also been recognized for their export excellence, winning a Gold Award in the Engineering Services Category at the Presidential Export Awards.
Synex International’s story is one of remarkable growth and a dedication to exceeding expectations. From its humble beginnings, the company has become a market leader, not only in Sri Lanka but also on the global stage. Their commitment to innovation, quality, and client satisfaction positions them for continued success in the years to come.
