A camp aimed at providing artificial limbs to 1,000 Sri Lankan beneficiaries was jointly inaugurated by High Commissioner of India to Sri Lanka Santosh Jha and Defence State Minister Premitha Bandara Thennakoon. This significant event, held at the Ranaviru Seva Authority premises in Gampaha, saw the presence of Defence Secretary Gen. Kamal Gunaratne and Army Commander Lt. Gen. Vikum Liyanage on Tuesday (7).
The camp, spanning two months and operating in Colombo and Vavuniya, is set to benefit civilians and defence personnel from various regions of Sri Lanka. The identification of civilian beneficiaries has been facilitated in collaboration with the All Ceylon Buddhist Congress, ensuring a wide reach across communities.
Supported by India, the camp is organized by the Indian NGO Bhagwan Mahaveer Viklang Sahayata Samiti (BMVSS), renowned for its work in the physical and socio-economic rehabilitation of the physically disabled. Founded in 1975 and headquartered in Jaipur, the BMVSS is the world’s largest organization for differently-abled individuals, particularly noted for its expertise in fitting artificial limbs and providing related aids.
The High Commissioner, Santosh Jha, emphasized India’s enduring commitment to Sri Lanka and the tangible impact of the India-Sri Lanka partnership on people’s lives. This Artificial Limb Fitment Camp not only reflects this commitment but also signifies a long-standing effort to improve the quality of life for individuals in need within Sri Lanka.
